Jayden looked around the room, wondering where he was. He had never been in this place before.
The last thing he remembered was arguing with his mother on the landing, and now he was in this room.
He got up and walked around the room, inspecting it. It was then that he noticed a door and opened it.
He walked into another room that was crowded with people hoping to ask them where he was.
“Jayden! What are you doing here?”
Jayden turned around and was surprised to see his Grammy! She was sitting with a man with no hair on his head but he had a thick white mustache and reminded Jayden of his father.
“Grammy!” he said running up to her and hugging her. “What are you doing here?”
“I should be asking you, Jayden,” she said smiling at him.
Jayden stared at his Grammy. Her white hair appeared to shine and she was wearing a white dress and shoes. He looked at the man beside her who smiled but didn’t say anything.
“Where are we, Grammy?”
“This is where I live now, Jayden,” she said smiling.
“Who are these people,” he asked looking around. They were all staring at him and were also smiling.
“They are my friends.” Grammy turned to the crowd. “This is my grandson, Jayden.”
“Hello, Jayden,” they said in unison.
“Hello” he said and then turned back to his grandmother. “Who is this man and why are you holding his hand?”
“This is your grandfather, Alexander. You don’t remember him because he passed on when your father was a baby.”
“How did I get here Grammy? I don’t understand.”
“Well…I guess you’re here for a visit,” Grammy replied, leading him to a nearby chair. “Come on and tell me what’s going on.” Jayden watched as Alexander left the room with the others.
Jayden sat down and told her about his visit to Virginia and the fight he’d had with his mother.
“That’s all I remember.” He finished sadly. “I wish Pop would stand up to Mom!”
Grammy shook her head. “Your father loves your mother very much. He’s my son and I tried to warn him, but he has always overlooked her faults. Still, if it hadn’t been for her, I wouldn’t have you, Jayden.”
Jayden grinned. “I guess not, Grammy.”
“While you’re visiting, we can catch up on things,” Grammy said sounding excited
“Why did Alexander leave if he’s my grandfather? Why didn’t he stay?”
Grammy smiled. “You don’t remember him and he can’t feel your love. He is willing to step back and let us be together.”
Jayden nodded. “Can he talk?”
“Yes, he can talk. He will come if you want him to or we can do things just the two of us while you are here. We can talk like we did when you were younger.”
“And play checkers and eat fish sticks,” Jayden replied grinning.
Grammy laughed. “Of course. You’re my boy, you know.”
Jayden’s face grew solemn. “Grammy, I have this problem that happened after you left me.”
“I know,” she said nodding. “I didn’t die from germs, Jayden.”
“I know.”
“You know that hugging and kissing are good things, don’t you,” Grammy asked.
